Do you people who use the physical envelope system ever get nervous about having all that cash in the house on a routine basis? I don't think I'd be comfortable from the safety perspective.
Think about it. We're posting on an internet forum, for all the world to read, that we keep what could be a fair amount of money at home. Sometimes I wonder if thats really wise.
It's definitely good to follow safe internet practices.
In an ideal world, we can trust people and technology would be used for good, but the reality is that the internet has also become a tool for nefarious purposes, for those ranging from pedophiles to terrorists.
1-I don't have that much money in envelopes
2-Where do I live again?
After starting this thread I actually tried some of the budgeting systems suggested and have started virtual envelopes for alot of my categories. I am being very careful though because I know how easy it is to go off the deep end and get myself in trouble again. So I have even less cash around than ever.
I have a really mean doberman! I just love the envelope system. The money goes to the bank two or three times a month. I don't have a house payment and that is usually most people's biggest payments. My charge card payment is large because of building materials, but that is deducted directly from the checking account and never goes into envelopes.
The worry about having cash in the house is overblown. Most of us have hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in electronics, jewelry, etc. Also, unless you go around advertising that you keep $X in your desk, no one is going to know.
I have seen a couple of cool stand-alone 'virtual envelope' software programs. I think they were both shareware. They work like Quicken or Money to help you budget and track, but the interface/menu of accounts looks like a desktop with 'envelopes' on it. Might be a good system for some folks; especially someone transitioning from physical envelopes to a computer. Just a thought. If someone's interested you can check this one out: Snowmint Budget or just Google 'budget envelopes shareware' and see what you get.
Thank you for posting this. I have been looking for something and myenvelopes seemed to be it but I didn't want another monthly fee. I checked out htis one and it seems to be just what I need. the free down load is a reduced option one, and seems to only work for a lillited amount of time. I think I will be using my 2week no spending challange savings to fund it's purchase.
