Hey - my bank wants to charge me a monthly fee for billpay unless I maintain a ridiculously high balance in their ridiculously low-interest checking account.
I use Wachovia Online Billpay, and I am very satisfied with it. I believe that it comes free with any of their Checking Accounts.
It has the ability to electronically sync with many common companies, and it can also send a check to any person/place/thing free of charge if you supply the name, address, time of payment, and amount. I couldn't be more pleased with its features and ease of use.
I have free bill paying with Citizens Bank (formerly Charter One here in Western NY); my credit union and like shelbylovesmelby states "most of my bills offer FREE ONLINE Billing."
If your bank wants to charge you for bill pay, consider changing banks because most don't, even my little local outfit here offers free online banking with free bill pay. If you don't want to change banks, maybe open a second account with another bank for bill pay purposes. Also, you could check out MyCheckFree.com, which is a free bill pay service, though it does not let you pay all your bills necessarily, just those companies and entities on its bill payer list.
Other services, like Yahoo! online bill pay are free for three months and then something like $4.95 a month thereafter. I'm with you though, I wouldn't pay for this when it is offered free of charge by so many.
I have an one-line high yeild checking with Zion's if you are in the Utah area. They are currently paying 2.89, free-bill pay and I've been pleased. I have to keep a $2,500.00 min balance to earn any interest, but since I go on one month chucks I'm able to do that. I just called and had them switch the type off account I had.
Another thing to consider is paying from the payee's web site rather than yours. Most CC and Utilites will do this without charging. Course then you have to go to each web site to pay, but you don't have to use another service.
Lastly, I use mvelopes, it a service I pay for, but it comes with free bill pay and I get all my statement by e-bill and it's effortless. Plus all accounts are all in one place and I can look at them all at once and it pulls the transactions for all of them. So paying a CC is just a transfer from one account to the other.
Well, my CU offers it up to a point. I don't recall how many transactions that is. I don't use it though, because I like having direct control over when stuff gets paid, and how much. Yes, I know it's unnecessarily anal of me, but I like it just fine thankyouverymuch.
www.checkfree.com I use this site for most of my bills, the only draw back is you have to allow 48 hours before funds are posted to your account...but it's free
Yes, but as I pointed out MyCheckFree.com (the consumer portion of CheckFree services) doesn't let you input biller information and pay all of your bills. You can only pay the billers they have on their list. If he wants to be able to send a check to his local garbage pick-up or for an account otherwise not on the list, he'll still need a bank or service.
Mvelopes is very cool and the included bill pay makes it even better but, after a 30 day intial trial, it is not free.
Haku? I've never used a bill pay that doesn't allow me to choose the date the bill is paid and the amount paid.......are there such things out there?
Are you talking about having things automatically drafted out of an account on a certain set date? I've seen these for home loans....one of the many reasons I refinanced.

Hehe. I don't know, but yeah, my CU will allow me to set those things in billpay also.
Again, I just don't use it because sometimes, I'd like to pay more, and sometimes I pay more than once a month on monthly bills.
Now that I think about it though, the biggest reason is because I can't keep track of it with my PDA software. If it goes through automatically without me knowing, even if it's only a couple of days before I realize it, it could throw my budget off. I just don't like the propspect of that happening.
But please don't get me wrong though. I have absolutely no problems with anyone using billpay. In fact, I whole-heartedly endorse the concept. It's just not something I am doing right now (yet) because of the quirky way I do my budget, but so far, I am OK with that.
Sorry Pound I did not notice your post about Checkfree.com but one can check out Bank Atlantic they to offer free bill pay and have great incentives if you open an account. I use checfree and those that are not listed I simply just go to the site and it's only two of my bills
Guys, thanks for all the options. I like the wachovia idea b/c I could have it send a check to scottrade when I want to move some money over there.. Also could pay a business partner I have with that method as well.
I don't see myself using mvelopes only because I view them as a direct competitor to my little operation (I don't believe they view me in the same light however).
