So...this forum is mostly high net worth people in their 40s and 50s...BUT, I wanted to share this for all the lurkers here who are in their 20s and 30s.
Here is some solid advice if you are feeling financially behind:
1. Avoid auto loans
2. Avoid bad credit card debt
3. Improve your credit score
4. Keep expenses low
5. Max out your Roth IRA
6. Take your 401(k) match
7. Build a second stream of income (stocks or bonds are great for this)
8. Read more books
9. Invest at least 10% of your income (actually invest as much as you can)
10. Build a 6 month emergency fund (or even 1 or two months would be good)
Doing this stuff will put you ahead of at least half the country.
