Finance is like anything else, what gets measured gets managed. So, if you want to get ahead financially, its helpful to track your spending and your net worth.

In order to keep an eye on your money here are a free budget template and a free net worth template.

The budget template is geared for families, with categories for spending on children and other family related expenses. It also has separate tabs for each month of the year.

The net worth template is straightforward. You just total up your assets. Then you total up your liabilities and take the difference. This template has separate tabs for two adults and two children.

The templates aren't perfect, but they'll help move you in the right direction.

I currently just use a simple excel spreadsheet with a high level overview of our budget.
These reports get pretty granular.
Someone newer to budgeting would definitely benefit from using something like this, especially if they are trying to "fix" a bad financial situation

Like BJ, we still use spreadsheets for our budgeting as well. It's easy and straightforward. We can do live updates, thanks to Google Sheets. I've found it to be way easier than most budgeting apps.
