  • I filed taxes electronically on time, can I still get a fine by IRS?

I filed my Federal and State taxes electronically through Credit Karma's free service back in February.

On the website for CreditKarma, it shows both my returns were accepted by IRS/State government. I also have already paid both amounts due a few weeks ago (They were withdrawn from my bank account).

I am worried that Credit Karma could have made a mistake and I'll still owe money.

Last time I filed by paper, I ended up get a $200 fine, because although I paid the IRS well before the deadline, I didn't mail in my W-2s. Luckily because of how ridiculous the fine was (they got their money well before the deadline), I was able to get it waived last year.

Is there anything I should worry about?

Generally speaking, if you paid before 19th, there should be no failure to pay penalties and there should be no failure to file penalties; but if you owe more than $1000 each year, they may charge you with failure to pay estimated tax penalties. Income taxes are pay as you go so if you owe too much every year you will be expected to make estimated taxes - it does not matter if you paid on or before the 15th.

Filing electronically doesn't have anything to do with whether the IRS will come back at you. Granted there seems to be less chance of making a stupid mistake if you file electronically, couple years ago I forgot to sign the forms in trying to get hubby to sign. You do have to be sure that you have filled out everything you were supposed to.

Just go to sleep and forget about taxes and them coming after you.
