Goodness - Here I feel good when I have $200 bucks in my checking account! But any time before going shopping, I double check on line what is in the account. I balance my checkbooks every Wednesday. I have a method in my madness because we are always squeeking by as we live on so much less than many of you. Not jealous, just stating facts. For me to have $2500-5000 always in my checkbook is the equivilant of 2-4 months worth of income! I do use a spiral notebooks that has each page for a month and each month's pages has a date for each Wednesday when I balance the checkbooks and pay bills. After over 20 years of tracking bills this way, for me it works and I can sit down at the beginning of the year, set up the next 12-13 pages, and all regularly occuring yearly expenses on the day that they will be due for the year. That way they are never forgotten, a(lthough I do not write down Christmas day, because unlike many Americans who seem to forget that it is coming, I have been gathering gifts all year. ) When new monthly bills show up they get written done under the appropriate date to be paid. This way for me has helped me through thick and thin, poor years and more abundant years. It helps me to know for sure that I won't have a yearly bill coming due for the next few months and if the money is already set aside, I can dump any excess into credit card bills that I want to get paid off and be done with ASAP. Works for me anyhow and that is the point of your budget or spending plan or whatever you want to call it. Bills are paid, savings are saved and the groceries get bought.
