  • Budget Books for College Grads - Suggestions?

A family member will graduate from college this year. I want to give her a basic budgeting book and/or personal finance book as her gift. I plan on opening a Roth IRA for her as well. Do you have any recommendations for basic budgeting/personal finance books that are good for young adults?

First, you can't open a Roth for someone else. They need to fund it with earned income.

As for books, I think The Millionaire Next Door is a great one. It doesn't focus on budgeting but rather mindset about spending and living expenses. Suze Orman's Young, Fabulous, and Broke is good, too.

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

She has a college job so she's earning income for the year. I also know her SSN, DOB, etc., I just want to get her over the hump of actually opening up an account. I don't plan on maxing it out for her.

Thanks for the book recommendation. I'll check it out on Anazon.

Millionaire Teacher: The Nine Rules of Wealth You Should Have Learned in School by Andrew Hallum. https://smile.amazon.com/Millionaire...sap_bc?ie=UTF8

I read the 2011 edition and thought it was the best basic intro to personal finance and investing I'd ever read. It has been updated for 2017.

          Best book for millenials

          Hey YULACU,

As a fellow millennial myself I would highly recommend the book "I Will Teach You To Be Rich" by Ramit Sethi. It's a comprehensive book that cover savings, investments and long term financial strategies for millennials. I'm confident that your family member will love the book and appreciate the advice. I've provided a link for the book below:

So, I had a $25 gift card and I ended up buying Young, Fabulous, and Broke, Millionaire Teacher, and I Will Teach You To Be Rich. I suspect that I will keep two of them for myself since I could probably stand to learn a thing or two as well. Thanks for the help!
