Watch this movie then come back and tell me why you need to keep the majority of your money in bank accounts. Do you remember when this happened? --> Google, Apple all of the tech companies got together to warn us within a mere 24 hrs prior. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpvcc9C8SbM If there is a catastrophe, you need to have something ready to barter with for food, etc...yes you're a physician so you have some leverage there to barter but why not be better prepared? history will repeat itself at some time. It always does.

He only has 3/4 of a million so difficult to put a full million in a safe.

And what happens if someone steals or breaks into his safe? Those type of things happens as well.

That being said, I would never handle cash transactions the way you do. What happens if a dispute arises to the sum the landlord received, or whether they received it at all? Or your water gets shut off because the clerk opening your payment envelope decides to just pocket the money?

I have done multiple cash deals for home improvements with contractors that offered a discount if I paid them that way. The most likely reason they made such an offer is so they can avoid reporting the income. Regardless of their reasons, every single one of them provided me with a receipt for the cash I handed them.

The way you are conducting business, you have absolutely no proof of payment if something happens to that cash.
I cannot speak to the contractors except to say my husband reports the majority of his income, cash or not. It is easier for us to have cash as the bank can hold a large check not allowing us to have access to our own money. Not usually but it could happen. And it's not anyone's business who my husband works for so for the sake of privacy on both ends, cash is better.
Regarding someone pocketing the money, it's never happened. And if it did, in the decades we've overall been living this way, we probably still come out ahead. I don't believe your sinereo is common BUT we do live in a very high cola area of California. Most folks here are affluent, including the lady who takes our water payments. Most people will not risk their jobs for a measly $75 water bill. Also we'd notice if our next bills balance was higher. The main bill we'd have issue with is internet but our son lived here, works for Apple so I am not sure how that was set up but I pay him $50 a month. He moved out about 3 months ago. I know Apple pays or re-imburses him for his internet.

You have a contractor put it in a secret space somehow. The home we are looking at has a fold up floor with a ladder.
I'll go edit my post. DS can put a quarter million or so in a safe then. Maybe it can be in gold or silver, or a mix.

Go click on that link..the movie about Aaron Schwarts. It's a really good

Interesting. I was guessing you lived in a small town somewhere. You live in an affluent area and have no problem leaving $1,300 in cash under your door mat each month?

One thing that did shock me was that my husbands Uncle had a safe deposit box yet the lady stole a diamond ring. She was an operations officer, higher position than a Teller.

Otherwise I would assume my husb. uncle just forgot somehow he removed the ring, he was in his 90's. But when going to get it, this lady screamed at me and threatened to have me thrown out of the bank. This is because instead of waiting in line, I sat with the new accounts rep and had him check if he had a safe depsit box still. He affirmed he did have one. She walked up, threw a fit saying he didn't have a safe deposit bix. I said nothing... as I bet the New Acct Rep had to have been wondering what the hell was happening!!

I went to another branch to report her peculiar behavior. That branch manager informed me that theft regarding bank employees, esp tellers, is much more common than I thought.

Of course, when I did get access to the safe deposit box, the ring was gone. I wouldn've never thought of someone stealing it had she have not went off for no reason at all. I've been back 3 times since and never seen her since. I think she was fired.

Thank you DS for the tip. I might start depositing cash into the ATM if I see a new Teller at the bank. We always wait for a certain teller who had cancer who shared her story. it's doubtful she would steal imho.

Nowhere did I state that those scenarios were common, but they are possible and you would have no proof of payment. How you would "still come out ahead" is beyond me?

Also, drug use is a problem among teens in affluent neighborhoods also. Those teens steal, believe it!

It seems like you are so much in favor of your lifestyle that you will argue every aspect of it. Even the main one that makes no sense, cash transactions without a receipt.

Do you realize you just completely contradicted your prior post where you didn't think the affluent people would risk their job to steal?

Yes, your post was regarding a $75 water bill and this is regarding a ring. Did your uncle have an itemized list at home as to what was in that box? If not, you don't think this woman would have taken cash as well?

So instead of it being invested in a diverse mix of securities where it is safe and secure and grows in value over time, I should instead use it to buy a few pieces of shiny metal that have zero return and keep those in my possession where they could be lost or stolen.

                  No thanks.

Dave you save alot of money using cash. If someone stole $1300 from us, I am confident we'd still come out ahead.

My Uncle lives in Carson, California. It's an expensive area of Los Angeles 8 hours from us. It is also a very rough area, many low income people reside there.
They have a homeless problem there too. No contradiction

Lost or stolen? Put just part of in a safe then
You're a Doctor, you can't be that careless can you??

Here's the link again. Watch it FIRST then come back with your rebuttal regarding the risk of loosing rocks or cash versus investing it.
I don't know how to invest or it would be a consideration. I am not against it. You have the money And skills to cover all of your basis well in the event of a catastrophe.

How do you come up with this stuff?

Why would that teller be more trustworthy? In fact, being a cancer patient could potentially make her a bigger risk. Why? Perhaps she has a stack of medical bills that she's struggling with. Or maybe she accumulated a lot of consumer debt when she was unable to work while going through treatment.

The point is you have absolutely no idea.

When I deposit a check using the mobile app from my bank, I get immediate confirmation that the transaction went through for the correct amount. If there is ever a question later, I've got proof of what occurred. With cash, you've got no such proof, especially when you aren't physically handing the money to the other person and getting a receipt. When you're leaving it under your door mat or dropping it in a slot, it would be a simple matter for someone to make off with some or all of that money. It's great that it has never happened, but you're taking a lot more risk doing it that way than the rest of us are doing it electronically.

How do you save a lot of money using cash? I'm always open to saving money, even if that means paying for something with cash.

Steve, make sure you do your homework when purchasing your safe. You don't want your quarter million to burn up in the fire safe that you bought.

No, if someone steals $1,300 from you, you are out $1,300. There is no coming out ahead in that scenario.

A loss of $1,300 is still a loss of $1300 despite you living in an affluent neighborhood.

Also, how affluent could the California neighborhood be if you are able to rent a house for $1,300?

Unless of course you create a Go Fund Me page regarding the $1,300 loss and the generous folks that are comfortable with online money transfers contribute more than the $1,300.
