  • unreimbursed medical expenses tax question

I come in at right about 10% of my income with unreimbursed medical expenses. Am I interpreting this correctly? Only what you spent above 10% gets deducted, not the whole 10%.

plus there's a rule about if your employer paid part of your COBRA insurance, you have to take that amount out, which makes no sense to me. But if so, I would fall way below 10%.

so in my case it's probably not be worth doing, correct? I have no mortgage, no other deductions, I should just take the standard deduction?

Correct only the part above 10%
You can only claim expenses you actually paid. If employer paid the expense you can't claim.
The standard deduction for 2015 is 6300 for single 12600 for MFJ

ok, this is going to sound really stupid but I'm gonna ask anyway. The amt above 10% needs to be greater than the standard deduction to make it work. because I have nowhere near as much as what the standard deduction is. I don't even know if this question makes sense, lol, sorry!

Are you sure you don't have any other deductions?
        Property taxes
        State income taxes
        Charitable contributions

If you have no other deductions at all and the amount of you medical expenses that exceed 10% of your income is less than the standard deduction, you should just take the standard deduction.
