  • Things you must do before the end of 2018

DH and I are doing conversions to Roth. We have a tiny bit more to convert for 2018.

We also have an FSA account that has some money left in it which we must spend by 31 Dec. I want to replace the first aid kit for my car. (I have been waiting to make sure we don't need the money for anything else). If anyone has any recommendations for first aid kits I'd love to hear them.

Anyone else finishing up stuff before 2018 closes out?

Everything I need to do can wait until next year (pay Estimated taxes, fund IRAs, etc.).

Nothing I can think of that I need to do before year-end. Especially since with the new tax changes, we can't deduct all of the stuff we used to deduct.

I mentioned it in one of the other threads, but I'll be doing a bit of tax loss harvesting to help cover $5k-$6k in gains I realized in October. I figure with the markets down this much, it's an easy way to save a few hundred dollars in taxes.

            Kork,

Are you and your DW in the year group(s) which have a choice of the new blended retirement system?

Yes I am. I've mostly decided not to do it (though I admittedly have been having some last minute second thoughts. I've got 10 years in, so my thought is that it is won't be to my advantage, since I'm planning to make it a career. My wife is getting medically retired soon, so it's not really a factor for her. Otherwise, we'd have put her into the new BRS.

We use our first aid kit pretty often. I made up my own using a tackle bag that was on clearance at Bass Pro and bits and pieces from here and there. I don't recommend the kits already put together because they contain a huge amount of cheap bandages and not much else. My favorite thing to add is a lighted loupe (some places call it a mini microscope).

The only thing I have to do is make sure the FSA is used up, but we techincally have until March to submit our receipts. There was only a little left the last time my husband checked, so I'm pretty sure it is gone with all of the dr visits this month.

What I needed/wanted to do by year-end has been taken care of. I'm losing dental and vision insurance at the end of the year, so at Thanksgiving I made appointments for a dental cleaning (followed by an appointment to have an old filling replaced - the filling could have waited a bit longer but I went ahead because of the insurance situation) and eye exam (got my new glasses a couple weeks ago).

At the end of the year I'll be doing my net worth calculation and will re-balance if needed (may be below target on stocks due to the recent market downturn, don't know yet because I haven't looked).
