  • Help with saving on cellphone service

    Hi all,

I have Verizon family plan, which is very expensive per line since I only have 2 lines; it gets significantly cheaper per line. I am paying roughly 130 dollars for 1 GIG of data and unlimited everything else on 2 phones that are still under contract until this November. There is a bonus of 2 GIG of data each month as well. Before folks go crazy about my communication spending, I want to state that the phones are for my wife and sibling; I do not have or need personal phone.

I would like to reduce my monthly service fee once I am finished with the contract. Currently, the bill is broken into 3 parts; $50 for family data plan and $40 for each iPhone. I know a large portion of the $40 fee is installment payment for the iPhone cost since I only paid $30 at the store. Is there good plans for folks who already have their phones. I must stick with Verizon since it is the most reliable network here in the sticks and these Verizon-specific phones probably don't work with other carriers. I would love to continue the current plan for $80 per months. I think that is a very fair price to be connected and for emergency. My family use the phones mainly to cruise the web for school and play games so data size is more important than voice service.

    Please help.

I would look into straight talk...when my wife wanted a smartphone, I did the math and it didn't make sense to stay with verizon when we could get straight talk (on the verizon network) for $40 a month cheaper. We've been using straight talk for over a year now and i can't complain about the service...you can buy a new SIM card for the iphone and it should work...i would talk to someone from straight talk (via the phone)...I wouldn't trust the folks a Walmart to actually know much...

I have been using Ting for the last year (sprint service basically) and you only pay for what you use every month and it has cut my cell phone bill by 2/3.

Check out the possible cost savings, it may be worth switching from Verizon and buying Sprint compatible phones.

Can't they just use WiFi for data And ditch the data plan?

I switched from Verizon to Republic Wireless. I did have to buy a phone, but the monthly rate is only $30 including data.

I've heard good things about Ting, Republic Wireless, and Straight Talk. We have AT&T and will look into switching carriers this year.
