  • If you have kids...

    Having gone through an identity theft, part of the remediation was to alert the credit bureaus. We went a step further and put a credit freeze on all 3 accounts (for both my wife and I). In addition I also put a credit freeze on both our children's accounts as their info was possibly effected as well. I know most do not think about their childrens ss# being vulnerable but a person could potentially cause great harm to their credit before they are even old enough to know about it. Just thought I'd let ya all know.

    Although I never had identity theft, I came pretty close. I also froze my credit reporting companies too. Recently, I was subjected to a "computer hack." I took them up on their free identity theft protection companies. So far so good!

      I'm another that froze our credit at the 3 reporting agencies. I just got tired of every other day reading about a hack I do get my DD19 credit reports 3 times a year but can't freeze her credit as she is in college and takes out the government subsidized loans. When I called the loan place they say they do pull her report before handing out the loans or I'd of froze her's too.

        Does it cost money to freeze your credit report? And what exactly happens when you do this?

          I believe there is a nominal fee (~$10 for each freeze) I was a victim of ID theft however so I just had to submit a copy of the police report and the fee is waived. It makes it so NOONE can access my credit history including me (normal running of credit from insurance and known loans are not effected, just anything new). If I need to get credit run I have to get a pin number for a temporary lift of the freeze from all 3 agencies.. Kind of a pain but ID theft is just that, a pain.

            I froze all 3 of mine as well;

            $10 Equifax
            $10 Experian
            $10 Trans Union

            To unfreeze it'll cost another $10 each but to me is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

              Different states have different fee's. Mine was $5 at each place. I froze mine and my DH so $30 total. If we ever want/need to get a loan or a new credit card I have to pay the $30 total and unfreeze at all again so my credit report can be pulled for the new credit.

              Of course if I just want the new credit in my name only I only have to unfreeze mine and not my DH's.
