  • Cost Per Mile Car Insurance

I don't know if others have seen the ads -- they pop up on this site every once in awhile -- that advertise cost per mile car insurance. I'm not familiar with this, but from what I was able to understand, for those who drive less than 10,000 miles a year, it can make more sense to buy insurance by the mile than the regular way. Does anyone know more about this type of car insurance, or actually used it? I don't drive a lot so I'm wondering if this would be a good way for me to cut my insurance costs.

Why not run the numbers for yourself? I believe they install a 'metro meter' device in your car to track mileage. The advert suggested 3.5 cents per mile. I'd check with your current insurance provider to see if they can lower your cost to approximate the per mile fee. The criteria for assessing auto insurance is different for every provider. Are you getting all the discounts applicable to your specific circumstances? Do you use an insurance broker or a specific agent? Have you been asking for estimates before each renewal period?
