Is an AARP membership worth it?

Is anyone here a member of AARP? I was looking at the membership thread and didn't see anyone mention they were. I will qualify in a couple of months and was wondering if it was worthwhile or something not to join.

I neither joined nor appreciated the barrage of "invitations" that began arriving BEFORE my 50th birthday.

I am 68 and have belonged on & off for many years.

Currently I have a FREE membership so it is certainly worth it for the various discounts (many offered by others too).

There is an AARP/Walgreens tie in that gives a discount on certain items and/or on a certain day each month. So, if you are a BIG Walgreens shopper it may be worth a paid membership.

My husband joined last year when he turned 50 and the discounts to hotels(Hilton specifically) paid for the $16 membership fee many times over.

I think the answer is the same as with other discount clubs. If you pay attention and make regular use of the available discounts, you can save way more than the membership fee.

We have found that AAA and AARP discounts are often the same, so having both is sometimes unnecessary.

AARP does provide a magazine and bulletin that we both enjoy reading so that's worth something.
