  • How much does the average family spend on gas?

Does anyone know what the average family in the US spends on gas? I just paid $2.53 a gallon at a local gas station, and I was paying more than $4 a gallon earlier this year. My gasoline costs have gone down about $100 a month with the falling prices. I assume the average price a family pays for gasoline will fall with the falling price. Are there statistics somewhere that tell what the average family pays each year?

The EIA, or Energy Information Administration keeps those stats for the U.S. Here is an example of the most recent. It says expenditures will be the lowest in 11 years!

We use these for work all the time!

I think we will have spent $720 for the year with 2 drivers.

My van gets 10 miles to the gallon, so I spend a lot! But I did fill up today for 2.04 a gallon. I never thought prices would come down this low but it is a happy surprise.

            Gas prices

Gas here is $1.82. I drive 50 miles round trip to work with 31mpg. Wife runs around the local area. We spent $140 for gas last month. Budget, before low gas prices, was $200.

1000 miles per month at 25mpg is 40 gallons of gas. Maybe $100 a month?

Dallas, TX, but I'd like to retire to Arizona, perhaps Phoenix / Scottsdale.

joshuaking, please permit me to throw a zinger at you: I last filled up at $1.74. Then I came home and looked on gasbuddy.com only to find that I had missed the $1.65 gasoline...I looked again this morning and the are average is now $1.94. We try to be conservative with our driving regardless of price, though.

At peak oil prices I was spending about $50 a week.

That's been reduced to around $30 now.

                    I'm saving $80 a month or 40%.
