  • DD got her first credit card today!

We've been meaning to do this since she turned 18 in September but finally had her sign up for her first credit card today. I was expecting to have to co-sign for her but she actually qualified on her own and got a $900 credit limit (I was expecting $500). Very proud of her!

    Congrats.

I remember when I signed up for my first card. It was at college. I got a $500 limit and a free t-shirt. This was back in the mid 90's when it was still legal for the credit card companies to offer free goodies to the unsuspecting college kids for signing up for their cards.

When I was in college (82-86) we used to go to the mall and sign up for every store card we could. We'd get the free gifts: t-shirt, umbrellas, 2 liter bottles of Coke, whatever. We knew there was no way any of us would qualify since we had no jobs and no income.

I finally got my first card through the bank that was associated with the college but my dad had to cosign.

Discover Cards were big when I was in college. They had just come out that year, and I remember tents and giveaways. You fill out an application and got a free gift. You barely needed to have a pulse to qualify. Kids were running around acting like BMOC when their cards finally arrived, and showed their financial clout by buying stereo equipment and leather jackets. Unfortunately, few had an income to support their spending; one guy I knew racked up over $12k in credit card debt before he dropped out.
