I agree that you definitely should not go into debt over your wedding or take a loan out from your 401K...that's just a bad way to start your marriage.
But I disagree that it's considering a "luxury" expense...it's your wedding and people have different views on it. Don't judge someone for spending thousands of dollars to celebrate with their family/friends.
I can't even imagine having a $5K wedding. Not trying to judge but that gets you nothing these days. My DW and I saved up for a year and had a beautiful destination wedding with 50 of our closest friends/family and we paid everything in CASH!
If you can afford it, absolutely no problem with spending the money.
Things you should spend money on are the food and venue...everything else you can supplement by doing it yourself. Flowers are not needed except the essentials for your bridal party.
Make some cuts but never put yourself in a bad situation. Good luck and Congrats!!
