I wanted to buy a diamond for my mother. I literally don't have any experience about the diamonds. I searched in the websites where I could get the best diamonds in toronto. I found many diamond stores. Its my first gift to my mother as I got my first salary and her birthday is coming next week so I need to know the best in toronto
If you want to buy a diamond for your mother, how would you be having it set? As a ring, necklace or brooch, etc? This makes a difference in what size and kind of diamond you need. Also it sounds like this is a gift from your first paycheck or having you been saving up? Don't want to rain on your parade, but unless you have some other savings, etc. buying a diamond as a gift for your mother is a very expensive gift for anyone to give from their first job, but maybe I didn't understand what you were saying about your job.

Diamonds aren't traditionally bought for mother's as gifts that I know of. Is this something she would actually like and wear? If a ring does she have arthritis or any hand problems at this point so that she has problems wearing rings? While I have major arthritis in my hands, both of the rings I wear are from after coming down with it. As the top knuckle of my left ring finger is getting distorted, I'm not sure how much longer I can even wear my wedding band. You might want to get your mom a necklace/brooch with your birthstone in as a reminder of it being from you. Make sure the jeweler knows that this is a gift for your mom, and not a diamond for a girlfriend so he can show you 'mother' type settings.

$18k ring would get you maybe $6k buyback at a jeweler, even less at a pawn shop... so even if he got the ring back, its not worth nearly as much as he paid. The diamond industry is crap IMO.

buy a 24k gold band and it will retain its value much better than a pice with big stones, 18k would buy a very heavy gold ring

Answering your question becomes easy as you mention that you are free from any kind of debt. I have a few friends in the jewelry industry who say that the ring you are seeking is very much in the right price zone and since you have saved up quite a lot, you could make the plunge.

All the Best and Congrats on the Engagement.
