What's the difference in tax liability when my martial status on my w4 is married instead of single? Also if I am married do I have to have it that way on my w4 or can I keep it as single?

You can fill out your W4 any way you like. Your choices are merely translated into a number for what gets withheld. Those choices (number of dependents, married, etc) do not need to reflect reality.
