  • How to make $40 fast?

I was a little overzealous in my saving this week, I transferred a nice amount but I forgot about a single $40 bill coming out of my checking account. I like seeing that nice high (relatively speaking) balance in my savings, but I will need money for a single refill on gas.

How do I find $40 this week to cover gas?

You keep less than $40 buffer in your checking?

Insane. I get panicked if checking falls below $10,000. Of course I hate balancing my checkbook...haven't done it since 1997.

        Well...

I'm aggressively trying to pay off some CC debt. But your point is noted. I think I just like the challenge and motivation to maybe sell some of my stuff. I won't overdraw.

Sell something. Go donate plasma, do one one of the gigs on craigs list.

I think what I'll do is take the bus until next paycheck.

Not to hi jack the thread, but why so much in checking? I tend to only keep my monthly spending money in my check (for bills, groceries, gas, eating out, shoppin, etc) and everything else in its appropiate savings account. Maybe an extra couple hundred for wiggle room.

If taking the bus offers such significant savings over putting gas in your car, why isn't it something you do all the time? I hate public transit myself, so I can totally relate if you just don't like it. But, if you're trying to be aggressive with your debt payoff, and this is a place you could be saving money, why not use it as a way to save money more often (at least until you're out of your aggressive debt payoff phase)?

Because I am just lazy and don't want to worry about nickel and dime transactions causing me a bounced transaction (which would be like a year of interest if I had the money in a "high yield" saving account.

I really have not balanced my checkbook since 1997. I do check the account every week to make sure there are no transactions from Nigeria but I don't sweat the small stuff (sub $100 purchases) or try to track them.

We have been building a RV recently and I am constantly paying a few thousand a month on the credit card (I pay it off every month) for supplies and things like solar panels, generator, welder. With the large buffer in checking I don't have to worry that I won't have enough to cover the entire CC balance each month when it auto debits.
