Here's a question that came up over dinner last night. Do the Olympics hurt your finances? For the next couple of weeks, people are going to be spending a lot of time watching the Olympic games when they could be doing other things. Does this end up hurting their finances or is it just another form of entertainment? We had an interesting discussion about it so I thought I would throw it out here to see what you all had to say.

No effect here. I'm not a big sports fan. I do enjoy watching some Olympic stuff but I'm generally too busy to sit and watch TV at night. I have meetings most nights. The weekend is probably the only time where I might watch some.Steve

No, it doesnt affect my finances.
I cant imagine what kind of conversation you could have about the olympics hurting peoples finances? Thats like a tv show that reruns each night for an hour or two and saying...I wonder if the Big Bang Theory is going to hurt peoples finances?
Most people arent going to sit and watch the olympics 24/7 for the next 2 weeks. They may watch a couple hours at night when they would normally be watching some other program.

I love sports, and I watch them quite often. But, I've never known them to hurt my finances. I don't really see how watching the Olympics or any other sporting event could hurt my finances. Now, if you're talking about going to an actual stadium to watch a sporting event live, then yes, that can get quite expensive. But just to sit and watch a game on tv in the evening has no effect on my finances.
It's not as if I was going to research the stock on company ABC tonight, but instead I'm going to watch downhill skiing.Last edited by bjl584; 02-07-2014, 11:38 AM.Brian

Do they hurt finances? No - how could they?
I mean, if some hourly worker is giving up shifts in order to sit at home and watch giant slalom, okay - they're hurting their finances. But I find it pretty hard to believe that THAT's a real issue these days.
I watch a certain amount of television. What I watch will be replaced with some Winter Olympics coverage. I'll probably also have it on in the background while I do other things.
If anything it would save me money if I stay in and watch TV rather than go out and spend money on something.
