  • Another Budgeting App Question ...

So I've been checking out some of the budgeting apps that have been mentioned in previous posts as well as a few others that I've found and I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for an app that will allow me to set up a budget with defined categories that will also allow me to enter a max dollar amount for each category.

And then as I enter expenses into each category during the month, it not only gives me a total dollar amount left for the entire month, but a breakdown of how much I have left for each specific category.

What I'm finding are apps that give a general overview (how much I've spent and how much I have left), but I'm failing to find something that will break it down by category.

I'm 99% sure you can do all if that in mint.

My problem with Mint is the first thing it asked me to do was add my bank account. Couldn't seem to get around that. I don't want to add any accounts. I want something simple that lets me start with a specific amount of money for the month, set limits for each budget category, enter transactions on a daily basis into the variable categories (food, gas, ect.), and get a breakdown of what is left per category.

I might just go with excel. I thought maybe there would be a simple app out there that would do it, but haven't found anything that does what I want without a bunch of other extras.

Try You Need a Budget... it's got a free trial, you don't have to link anything, and I'm pretty sure it lets you do all you want and more. For me, while it was really cool, I already had a perfect system set up in excel so I use that, but if you have nothing yet, then try it first.

          Thanks. I'll check that out.

I have perfected my excel spreadsheet to do exactly what I want it to do now. It works for me, because I don't have a boat load of transactions to keep track of.

Was hoping to find some sort of all in one mobile solution for my gf, because she tends to spend money way more frequently than I do and probably would frown at the idea of sitting down every day and entering them into a spreadsheet like I do.

The Easy Envelope Budget Aid does that, and the basic version is free.

If you're using iOS, try Money Lover, there is a free version and ads doesnt really annoy me. I heard this app from one thread long time ago posted by DisneySteve if im not mistaken.
