  • Spending 4 Hours To Save $400?

    The scenario:

You have to buy an expensive item for the house. You could either spend the full amount on a brand new item, or you could buy a previously owned item for $400 less than the retail price..

The only catch is that you would have to do some repairs to the item.. The 4 hours is to learn how to do the repairs, and then perform the repairs.

This is not for everybody, but it's a great idea to make $100 per hour anytime you can!

Or you can just buy a used item that still cost significantly less, but is in good working order, and save the four hours. That's generally more our speed - the "used" savings is pretty significant. So it makes me wonder how much that $400 savings would be because it is used, and how much because it is broken.

If you can save money fixing things and are handy - that is great too. Not to knock the original idea.

If you are "handy" and confident in making the necessary repairs, that I think that is the way to go.

For me, I am not so would probably buy new (or find a used one where repairs are not needed)because I would not be 100% confident that I could fix it to where it would be useful and not end up having to fork over more money to get it into working condition...

Agree on repairing it myself....but super curious to know what the item and repair actually is if you don't mind sharing...

Hey, Omarcali, I cannot see myself ever turning down $100 per hour to make a simple repair. That rate of pay works out to $4000 for a 40-hour week... and $200,000 for the year!!

My personal do-it-yourself threshold is $25 an hour. If I can do the job instead of paying that much, I'll go ahead and do it. (Except for cleaning house, against which I seem to have an irrational aversion.)
