  • Perscription Drugs Need Info

I have diabetes and several other issue's. My "insurance" refuses to pay for the drugs I need. They will pay for the cheapest, but it makes me dramaticly sick. My Doctor even talked to them, no deal. They are very controlling in everything. I would like to know about Canadian drugs. I don't know a good pharmacy from a bad one? I know the propaganda is that only good drugs are from the US. I know that it's all politically controlled by the Insurance,Pharmacy, and perhaps the government. What to do?

Most drug companies have programs to get you medications for low nor no cost if you have a limited income. I have used these programs while I did have insurance, but sometimes they will only cover it if you don't. Go to the drug company's website and see if they have info on assistance programs.

My husband is also diabetic with many severe complications, and without insurance his medications alone would cost us over 7000 a month. Even with insurance our out of pocket expenses are pretty onerous. So much of the problem is systemic. There is only so much you can do, unfortunately.

The rule is supposed to be that they have to cover at least one drug in each drug class so if they're not abiding by that, that might be fuel for an appeal of their decision.

As for Canadian pharmacies, they were all the rage for a while. I had several patients who used to use them years ago but I haven't heard of anyone using them for years. I think the government really cracked down on that. If you decide to go that route, you need to verify that they are actually in Canada. I think what was happening was websites were popping up claiming to be Canadian pharmacies when they were actually Chinese companies. I don't believe that drugs have to be made in the US (many aren't already) but I would advise not to buy your meds from China.

I'm curious which diabetes meds you need that aren't being covered.

        thanks

The only thing my insurance will cover is metformin, it's the cheapest. It is the one that makes me seriously sick. There are three they refused to cover Januvia, janumet, victoza.
The insurance we have is threw the company my husband works for, They have there own insurance. They don't go threw national insurance plans. My husband is considering quiting and look for work with better insurance?

In place of Januvia, see if they'll cover Onglyza or Tradjenta which are in the same class.

In place of Victoza, see it they'll cover Byetta or Bydureon which are in the same class.

The fact that they cover Metformin is pretty worthless since around here you can get that for free or $4 at the most. Wal-Mart, Target, and Wegman's charge $4. ShopRite actually offers it for free. You don't need insurance for that.

If they won't cover Victoza or Byetta, the other option which isn't a bad one at all is to use insulin which is probably safer than Victoza anyway.

          Good luck.
