  • Need suggestions!

Recently engaged - last month. Our baby boy is due mid-July. $12,000.00 Emergency Fund.

My question is - what do we pay off/save for first?!

My car - $1,520.00 (I don't pay this right now, but want it paid off before baby arrives. I was thinking about paying it off in July which would be $1,000.00)
Attorney - $6,092.56 (Pay $100.00/month with no interest)
Wedding - $10,000.00 - I am thinking this is a good budget for us, but we haven't discussed it in detail yet. Thinking wedding will be May of 2015 (I want a Spring wedding and we need time to save and plan)
Family vehicle - $12,000.00 - We plan to keep this under what we have in our emergency fund. We would like to get the vehicle next summer.

I was thinking pay off car in July and pay off attorney by the end of this year. Now I'm thinking about the wedding and not sure what to do first! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

It depends on what your $12,000 EF represents. Is that 6 month of expenses? Do you have any other assets?

The $12,000.00 is 6 months worth of living expenses. Fiance owns the home we live in (still owes just under $84,000.00) and we paid $1,500.00 for his car so nothing is owed on that. I have another $1,500.00 in savings in case we need it when baby arrives. I believe he has around $8,000.00 in retirement and I have $1,350.00. He also has a daughter from a prior relationship that he pays child support for. He will be 29 in June and I will be 23 in August.

I'd be reluctant to use an EF to pay down debts or pay for a wedding.

If you were in dire straights, then by all means use some of the EF to pay off some debt and get your head above water. But, it doesn't seem like that is the case here.

I may pay off the car. The rest I would just work on trimming my budget to accelerate payments.

I wouldn't dip much below 6 months expenses in the EF with a baby on the way.

This confuses me. Why is it that you don't pay this right now? And, if you're not paying it, how is it going to get down to $1000 by July?

I'm sorry. I should have been a little more clear on the car loan situation. It is being paid, and on time. I'm just not the one paying it.
