Does it matter if I change the order of who's info I enter first into turbotax, DH or myself? Not in relation to taxes owed we file married, jointly. But here's the thing, usually it's dh's info then myself. Well this year I entered myself first(messed up cleared form and said wanted to start over, accidentally started with myself). I read that our taxes should be consistent with the year before in order to avoid a delay in refunds or risk an audit. Last year we got a refund, this year due to a change in circumstances we owe $. Do I really need to go back in and redo things? Does it matter if we owe $ that we changed the order of who is listed first on the return?

In a MFJ (married filing joint) account, the information is 'stored' under the 'primary' (first SS# on return); it does not matter for processing which SS# is first or second - when you call the IRS customer service lines, the first question is "What is the primary taxpayer's SS#?" If you have questions that cover multiple years, let the CSR know if the primary TP changes. Problems arise when the primary TP changes within the marriage and the partners change through divorce and remarriage. There is information on the return that is readily available to either partner in the marriage and there is information that is available only to the individual taxpayer (Wage and Income info - only you can get your W&I info).Originally posted by Thrif-t View PostDoes it matter if I change the order of who's info I enter first into turbotax, DH or myself? I hope I explained that well enough - there is no problem with processing your return, there are people who alternate each year whose name is first; there are people who think that the person who makes the most money (or any money) is the one to put first. Processing is not affected.I YQ YQ R

I dont think it matters. The IRS don't exactly publicize what it uses to flag out returns, but the simple order in which you file your names shouldn't flag you out for an audit or delay in refund. The things that would matter is if you omitted w-2s or 1099s.
