  • How I'm battling the Food Budget...and winning!

So early 2012 I decided I was spending way too much on food every month. So in June 2012 I took an average of what I was spending for the past 6 months (Mint.com is how I track all my purchases). I then decided I could probably deduct $100 from that average (you have to start somewhere) and it would still be an obtainable goal without sacrificing too much. So now that I knew how much I had to spend each month I then took it a step further and divided that number by 31(days in a month), rounded it, and used this new number as my daily food budget allowance.

This is the most important piece of information regarding any budget; success is all about the details. Being able to track your purchases and know where you stand at any day of the month is KEY!

I then setup an Excel spreadsheet and made a simple calendar. I wrote in a formula that when I inputted how much I spent that day for food, it would deduct from my daily allowance. This formula would then carry over to the next day and the next. So if I spent a large amount on groceries one day, I knew how many days it would take without spending anything to get out of the red.

This has been an amazing tool! It also helps tell me, how much I may be able to spend on going out for my weekends. If I had a really good week, I would reward myself knowing I could spend X amount over the weekend. Then there have been many times where this tool has allowed me to say ehh I'm too much in the red right now, I need to lay low and I'll be back on top in a few days.

It's all about having a plan and knowing where you stand at all times in relation to your monthly goal.

    Two things.

So how are you doing now? What money was you spending before, and what are you spending now?

Also, I tend to shop on a weekly basis. Is your system adaptable?

I'm doing much better! I was spending around $650 on average (groceries, restaurants, fastfood, alcohol/bars). For the past 6 months I've gone over $600 only once (December is tough with the holidays, especially when traveling!) But other than that, my new average is $553.

It works very well if you buy a lot of your food in advance. If your daily allowance is $10, and on a Monday you spend $40 on groceries, the calendar will show you in the negatives, until you come back to 0 on Thursday and on Friday it shows that you're back at $10.

I like this idea... I may play around in excel this evening. I've also been using mint.com for the last 6 months. mostly only for tracking where the money was going but starting this month we restructured our budget and have a plan to reduce our monthly spending by $1,400! We were spending around $650/month on groceries and now have a plan to reduce that to $500... the major step in this is weekly shopping. Before, we would go to the grocery store every 3 or 4 days if we needed something.

I highly recommend checking out mint as a free budgeting site... It's free! I assume they make money by trying to sell you credit cards but I just use it to track daily transactions, budgets and monthly trends.

Glad it can help and inspire!

This really holds true to an old management adage - "If you can't measure it, you can't manage it"... hmm I might add that my signature now!
