  • I'm irresponsible with money

The title says it all. I'm sick and tired of wasting my money each week. Inside I have this habitual need to spend my money as quick as I get it. I need advice on what to do. I'm 17 and I live with my parents and I'll be finished school in the summer. I get €30 a week but I always waste it on tobacco, weed and drinking. On top of that I'm horrible at paying my debts. When a friend owes me money I usually forget or just spend the money anyway which results in them getting pissed off at me. I want this to stop so I can have some money buy things I want or just save for a rainy day. Any advice?

You don't have a money problem so much as you have a drug and alcohol problem. Fix that first.

An alcohol problem? Maybe. But a drug problem? Hardly, I've never gone out of my way to get weed and I really only smoke once a week. I'm not asking for comments on my ''drug/alcohol problem'', I need saving advice.

So you think that drinking and using drugs at 17 have absolutely no impact on your mental ability to think clearly when it comes to subjects like financial management? And I suppose using drugs and alcohol is free for you as well?

You aren't irresponsible with money. You are just acting plain irresposible. Grow up, stop the partying, sober up, and get a job. Once you have an income, start paying back your debts, then start saving a portion of each paycheck in a savings account. Good luck to you.

What do you want to do with your life? It's hard to get motivated to take control of your money unless you have specific goals you're working towards. I'd think about that part first. After you set some goals, you can set up a couple of savings accounts and put some money in them each week so you don't spend it on other things.

Will you tell us more? Do you have a car? Do you have any bills? Do you work? I have a 17 year old son and may have some ideas for you but need to know more...

I suppose you are right. The first thing I'm gonna do is quit cigarettes, that's where a lot of my money goes. And no, the drink and drugs aren't free (unfortunately). I live in Europe so we don't have the over 21 drinking age and in my country it's socially acceptable for 17 year olds to drink.
''Get a job'' is bad advice. For the past year I have handed out countless CV's and talked to a lot of employers so I could get a job but to no avail. Right now the economy is ****ed so I have no chance of getting a job.

Currently I don't have a car (and probably won't for the foreseeable future). The only bill I can think of is paying my dad for a monthly Xbox Live subscription. I don't have a job but I have constantly looked for one for the year. In my town it's all about who you know to get employed as a teenager. Usually people I know get jobs through family friends and relatives, sadly this hasn't worked for me.

You just need to be creative. What types of jobs are you applying for? What about doing something for yourself like running errands, babysitting, cleaning someone's house? Put an ad in the paper or online advertising your services. Charge a nominal fee for your work. There are tons of ways to make money. You just need to think outside the box sometime.

Can you go door to door and ask if there are any odd jobs you can do such as mowing, washing cars, cleaning, etc? Be more proactive. Do you have any special tallents? What do you enjoy doing?

It's a funny attitude you American's have for making money Where I live you'd be laughed at if you go door to door. I'm male so I can't babysit. One thing that always interested me was repairing computers and game consoles. I have a decent skill in the field but there is already 3/4 businesses for that in my area. I'd need money to buy parts and tools too. I could sell weed to my friends but that is a risk I don't wanna take, no amount of money in the world is worth getting locked up.

Yes, stay away from illegal activities. Maybe fix computers and game consoles for your friends and classmates?

I guess there are cultural differences between here and where you are. But, the local grocery store in my town has a communication board at the front of the store. On there are tons of pamplets stuck to the wall advertising everything from yard work to babysitting. Mostly by people around your age looking to make some money. Is there anything similar where you live?

Can you do extra chores around your own house for extra money?

Have you done any follow up on places you have submitted an application? Go back weekly to each place and speak to the manager. Bug the h*** out of them and I guarentee they will remember you the next time they are hiring.

Make small goals and then give yourself rewards for reaching them. I'll give you examples in terms you may understand: For every job interview you get, reward yourself with a few bong hits. For every linkedin connection you make, enjoy a cigarette. For every odd job that results in even a small bit of income, buy a bottle of Johnny Walker.

In other words, give up these vices and become motivated at the prospect of enjoying them again.
