This is a whole separate discussion but despite Dave Ramsey preaching this, it simply isn't true. There are lots of reasons why a good credit score is helpful even if you never borrow a penny. You also don't ever need to borrow a penny in order to have a good score so that's a myth too.Steve

I agree! Our are 811 and 815. I was always told not to close too much. Doesn't matter much for us since we have had the same 2 cards about 20 years.

I periodically take advantage of the credit card offers with $XXX amount back for opening a new account and charging $1,000 - $3,000 over a period of several months. While it can be a good way to make a little extra money, it is certainly a pain to be opening and closing new accounts too regularly. $2,000 in a month in credit card rewards seems really high unless it is mostly for travel rewards and the miles were redeemed for an expensive plane ticket (especially with the cards that offer 50k miles for new members).

Credit cards a boon or punishment ?
Credit cards are nothing but temptations, they give lot of offers which my friend have correctly described, but one should not fall in the trap. One should spend with credit card that much only he can repay back otherwise the banks issuing them charge hefty interest rates which gives a heavy impact to the individual's pocket. Yes you can very rightly earn cash backs ... but one should remember the balance which you have spend in the card you have to repay them backOriginally posted by disneysteve View PostNot necessary. The cards often have special bonuses. Spend $XXX between this date and that date and get a bonus cashback of $ZZZ. Those bonuses are way above the 1% level. So perhaps it will be to spend $2000/month for 3 months and get $250 cashback which is over 4%.
Plus, there are all kinds of sign up bonuses for new accounts. Open a new card and get $100 after the first time you use the card or after you charge $1,000 or something like that.
Also one must be very sure of the Insurance part which the card covers, in case of thefts which are very heavy in this world. in case of any mis-use the card spent should be covered under insurance so that the person who is the legal owner of the card do not face any problems.
