There are 5 stati (darned Latin plurals - varied as 'status' and 'statuses' also) - single, married filing joint, married filing separate, head of household, and widow(er).

single - just you
MFJ - you and your spouse
MFS - you are married but file separately for whatever reason
HOH - single with dependent
W - spouse recently deceased.

Definitely not mix and match - you are only of the above.
