  • Deceased-to-deceased stock transfer?

My mother owned stock in 3M. When she died four years ago, my father inherited the stock. Now my father has died and I am to inherit the stock. Here's the problem: the stock certificates are still in my mother's name. My father never transferred it. They had a joint bank account and I guess the bank allowed him to deposit the dividend checks. So now, can I transfer the stock directly to my name or do I have to transfer it to his name first? And, if the latter, how do I do so now that he is also deceased?

I have already received instructions from the transfer agent to transfer from a deceased person to an heir. I have also located a Guarantor. So I will figure this out eventually. But I am very curious to know ASAP. This is in Kentucky.

I would contact either the broker or the investor services department for the company (can find that info on company statements or on their website). They should be able to tell you what needs to be done.
