I am looking for a new home. What is the best way to locate a bank to finance it?

I intend to purchase a home using a VA loan. What is the best way to locate a bank to ensure the best interest rate/fees?

I'm not a "shill" for the site, but I would check Bankrate.com. Check around with your local credit unions as well - can't hurt.

I personally, just refied through Amerisave. I would not limit my search to an area bank, the internet has many online options.

We refinanced through Amerisave almost exactly a year ago. Also have a brother who refi'd through them earlier in 2010 (which is how I heard of them). It was easy and painless for both of us.

I'm not involved with them in any way other than that, don't work in finance at all.

I went to bankrate.com and instantly compared rates from across the country. What a great tool.

Personally, and I am not a financial professional, so this is just my OPINION, I would shop around the credit unions. I wish we had gone with our credit union, because I am not terribly impressed with my Bank of America mortgage changing hands so often. They gave us a good rate, 4.25% late last year.

I would also shop around online. Not sure if a website like bankrate.com would have information on loans and current interest rates, but there are sites out there that compare loans from banks and rates side by side.

I would start with your bank that you have your savings/checking accounts. Then, ask friends who have a mortgage who have had a great experience. This way, you know you are getting advice from someone you can trust. If you have had a long history with your bank, they will probably try to help you out. It may not be the best deal, so make sure to shop around.

Through bankrate, i had contacted quicken and pinnacle mortage. Both the reps were very responsive and helpful. I didn't fully process the loan though (as the home offer fell through)

Mortgages, credit cards, CD's, etc.. It's pretty much all there. You can then contact the bank of your choice and in most cases have an online chat to see if they have what you want.
