  • Re: Dave Ramsey - Any Thoughts?

Ramsey seems to have a lot to offer people who want to get out of debt, and are having trouble getting into the right mindset.

Is that mostly what he's about? If I have no debt at all and no issues regarding overspending, does Ramsey have significant portions of his book(s) and radio show focussed on "building wealth"?

Of course if I checked him out I wouldn't be taking his word as gospel, it would be information I would weigh. I've just heard so much about the debt part that I don't know if I should give a listen/look.

Even many devoted Ramsey fans say he is lacking in the wealth-building areas. He could move that direction, I have no doubt he has the knowledge and/or people with the knowledge, but he chooses to remain pretty vague about investing (recommending four broad classes of mutual funds and that's about it). His focus - as has been said before - is on getting people out of debt. And he's very good at it.

If you have an AM reception, you can pick up Dave Ramsey's radio show, and he doesn't hide anything, so that you have to buy the additional information, It's FREE....

The $89.95, is for a 13 week, class, that you could take with others, you get cd's of the sessions, workbooks, etc...

I did buy the book for a discount, and we have paid off over $113,000 in debts using his plan...

Interesting. Good to know. (I could go into a long tirade about why using a debit card is a lot worse than using a credit card, but I'll spare everyone. )

Sweeps: is the $50 limited liability on cc the essence of the long tirade, or is there more? I'm a debit gal who sometimes uses a credit if I want the credit "protection." I did get my debit number stolen last year, so it was a pain. (Not the card, and not just the number-my card was "swiped" and a new card was created with a magnetic strip. Got all my money back but was funky.) Or maybe your tirade exists in a prior post? I like the cc protection, but I am not a fan of credit cards. And I spend less instead of more when I use a debit; I can blow through cash, but the dbit is much easier to track. I don't know why I want to talk myself out of it, but if I must....

just realize there are people out here with such disdain for those companies, for whatever reason, that they just don't want any more to do with them than necessary. it doesn't make them stupid, or naive for passing up on what you see as an opportunity, it just makes them different! and that's a good thing.
This was very, very well put.

Funny funny... but they actually take not accepting them pretty seriously

Yup. The commercial free downloads is what is the kicker for me. We don't have a radio station here that picks him up so I have to listen online. His regular site I could download for free but it's like 20 something minutes of commercials per hour. When I download I burn to disk sometimes and the commercials are redundant.

The forums offers support, so I guess it could be valuable to some, as well. Keep 'em on track, kinda thing.

Just being my usual butt self here, but I justify it as I'm saving way more money keeping inspired than it costs for the membership. We've eliminated over $30k in debt in the past 8 months, $18k left to go. Keeps the motivation.

I like Dave Ramsey. But what a lot of people seem to think is that DR is a saint that is trying to help everyone for free. He's trying to make money like the rest of us. There is nothing wrong with what he is doing. There is nothing wrong with charging for his commercial-free podcast and/or his online program.

I personally choose not to pay him for that stuff. I listen online when I can (for free) and I have bought his book. That's all the money he is getting from me. But you see, I CHOSE to do that. His baby steps is really all I needed personally and I could have gotten that for free. What bothers me are all the people looking to prove that DR is a crook. Jeesh. He's a business man.

If I knew what he did and could charge for it you better believe that I would. Another thing that bothers me is that people get so upset because me might have given out a piece of bad advise. You know my mother has given me bad advise in my life but that doesn't mean she is a crook. She's human. We all make mistakes (including DR).

So, take his advise for what it's worth. If it makes sense to you then use it...if not move on.

I for one enjoy his simplicity. Spend less than you make. He's a great motivational speaker.

If you need to archive, stream it to a recorder and pause during commercials. BAM!

This is how we did it in the old-days. hehehe

LOL! I'd never seen that page before. He has explained this on his radio show before, though.

I started listening to Dave Ramsey about 2 months ago and I really like his program. While I agree he is not for everyone but his advice has been very valuable for me. I don't follow all of his advice to a "T"...I still have 2 credit cards (no balance) that sit in a box on my desk that currently collects dust. What I really like is that he tries to impress upon people that they need to take responsibility for what they have done while at the same time advising them on how to not only rid themselves of the debt they currently have but also on how to avoid getting into debt in the future.
