  • What is your asset allocation?

I'm trying to psyche myself to do a big rebalancing act and get rid of some terrible individual stocks I bought seven years ago. I'd like to get some ideas for how folks allocate their investments in retirement and taxable accounts.

    Percent in cash?
    Bonds?
    Small cap funds?
    Large cap funds?
    International?
    Other categories?

    What is your age?

I haven't been able to diversify my portfolio *exactly* the way that I would like, because I just started investing last month, and with Vanguard's new $3000 minimums for most mutual funds, it'll be a while where I'm *exactly* where I want to be. But I'm actually sort of close to where I'd like to be, so I'm happy enough.

Percent in cash? 0% unless you count my emergency fund. If you count my emergency fund, it's 83%.
    Bonds? 14.1%
    Small cap funds? 22.6%
    Large cap funds? 57.6%
    International? 5.7%
Other categories? None, but I put midcaps in with small caps. Separating them, it would be about 15.5% in midcaps and 7.1% in small caps.

    What is your age? 23

I'll be moving into bonds by buying direct from Treasury Direct to get them up to 20%. My target allocation right now is more like 80%/20% than 86/14, which is where it is now.

      Rough estimates are:

      Percent in cash? 10%
      Bonds? 10 to 12%
      Small cap funds? 15%
      Mid cap funds: 20%
      Large cap funds? 30%
      International? 12 to 15%
      Other categories?

      What is your age? 46

      i look pretty bullish, huh?

        Cash: 87%
        Bonds: 8%
        Stocks: 5%

        Age: 24

The stocks and bonds are in a vanguard mutual fund (vwinx).

The bulk of our cash is for the downpayment for our house a year from now. Once I start my "real" job next August we'll begin investing in retirement with each paycheck.
