  • File DIY Taxes for Less

Just a recommendation to all of you who do your own taxes. This year I paid $9.95 to file my state (CA) return and my federal return was free. freetaxusa.com. I have used this site for six years now. Itemized deductions and a schedule C (small side business). It's very user friendly and IRS approved. If I had used TurboTax online I would have paid $111. Ouch!

I totally agree. I just finished doing my taxes this weekend, and submitted them online for free. Just downloaded all of the necessary forms, followed the instructions, and did everything myself. The hardest part is probably just in deciphering the (at times) fairly cryptic instructions. However, it's manageable, and it definitely teaches me about what's actually involved in my taxes, as opposed to simply giving it all to an accountant or answering half-questions on a tax software program.

We qualified to file our federal and state returns this year. We were helped with limited income and active military status. I highly suggest going to the irs website to find a free file program you qualify for.
