  • Efffective tax rate 2010

Over the weekend we did our federal taxes. Looks like our effective tax rate is
    8.5% for 2010.

    compare to
    2009 7.7%
    2008 8.32%
    2007 7.77%

    Anyone else?

    2010 - 7.1%
    2009 - 8.8%

That is *tax* divided by *taxable income*

Tax / income is much better:

    2010 - 2.2%
    2009 - 3.6%

This is what I usually look at.

Everything was pretty much the same both years, but $8k more in deductions for 2010 (medical and IRAs).

The tax on taxable income was only .1%. Crazy tax year when most of our income was tax free and the little we did have was reduced by deductions and exemptions. Technically, we paid zero tax because of credits.

I used this graph in a recent blog post to help contextualize how you compare to others at your income level. This left me feeling very good.

        2010 9.95%
        2009 9.29%
        2008 11.2%
        2007 6.79%
        2006 9.75%
