So what would you suggest investing in for an investment or retirement portfolio then?

I have not been here long enough to know about the resident trolls, but what I think this poster is suggesting is the Robert Kiyosaki approach where retirement investing in mutual funds is a "Poor Dad" technique for suckers, where the "Rich Dad" technique would be to start your own business and become rich. Starting your own business is considered "less risky" because you have control over your business, where you have no control over the stock market and fees from the mutual fund.

I think this is nonsense. Most business start-ups fail and there are a lot of factors out of the control of the business owner. More people have gone broke trying to get rich running a business. Not everyone can be a successful business owner, but everyone CAN invest for retirement. I guess the idea that everyone can get rich running a business and be their own boss is seductive, and a good way to sell books.

I'm very much for entrepreneurship, but not as a substitute for retirement investing.
