Yesterday I completed an on-line defensive driving course, and that entitles me to a 10% discount on my car insurance for the next 3 years. Today I got notification from my insurance carrier that my discount had been applied. The course cost $19.95 and took several hours to complete. One discount per driver per car. If you are a 2 person, 2 car household, both people will need to take the course to maximize your discount.
Whether or not you qualify for this discount depends on your state. To find out whether or not you are entitled to one in your state, click on this link and then click on your state:
GEICO | State Specific Information -
Although this is a Geico link, my understanding is that the states make the laws about the defensive driver discounts, and so if it is available in your state, it doesn't matter who your policy is with.
Look for the sub-heading "Defensive Driver Discount" and then click on the link that follows. (If there is no such sub-heading your state doesn't offer it.) It will tell you what the requirements are in your state. In some states, you have to be of a certain age (for example, 50 or older). In some states (like my state of Texas) anyone can get the discount.
In my experience, the insurance companies don't advertise this discount. You have to look for it. If you decide to do the course, please contact your insurance carrier first and take the course only from a company that they recognize!
When your 3 years are up, they won't remind you that you need to retake it. You'll need to make a note to yourself on your calendar.
I think this is one of the easiest ways to get a decent discount on what for many of us is a pretty major expense.
