  • Problem with credit report

    Hi

I am having trouble at the moment trying to open a bank account, I have tried a few different banks but all of them turn me down even for a basic account with no overdraft. The reason given is a poor credit rating, I did have trouble with an unpaid overdraft but paid that off around 18 months ago. I want to obtain a credit report but all the companies that provide this service want bank account details and I don't have any bank accounts. I am now stuck in a vicious circle any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Alex

To my knowledge, banking accounts (checking, savings, etc) are not reported to the credit bureau. So, I am skeptical about what website you are using to get to your credit report. They do use loan accounts as verifying factors, but even then they often throw in information that is not legitimate. When I pull mine they usually ask me to confirm my auto loan information...I don't have an auto loan, so I choose "None".

I suspect that it's not your credit report that is hurting you but your report with Chexsystems. It's kind of like a credit report, but it's geared more towards deposit accounts than loan accounts. I would contact the last bank you tried to get an account at and ask them to see your Chexsystems report (assuming they pulled it). It's possible that the overdraft from a few years ago is not showing as paid on the report. If so, then you need to go back to the original bank and get them to report it correctly.
