Do you have any life insurance through your job? Does your spouse?
If you both work and you can afford all your expenses on 1 income (in case one person dies), you may not need any life ins. But I would purchase some before you start to think about a family. It is much cheaper when you are young and healthy.
my 2 cents,
Joe

The simple answer is as soon as possible. The reason being, the older you get the more expensive the insurance premiums will become. Also shop a round a lot before you decide which insurance policy to go for. Additionally read the fine print and don't take a policy in haste. Insurance salesman can by very pushy

IMO you buy life insurance when you need it, and not a moment before. Life insurance is to help your SO pay for an asset that he or she may not be able to pay for alone. Generally that asset is a major one, like a "home."
If you marry and both work and rent, you may not have an immediate need.
When you start growing your family (children), then there is a greater need in most cases... and in fact, that's when most people start looking at life insurance, when they have a baby.
