  • Will this card help improve my credit score?

    Hello,

I was reading that a gas card is an easy way to improve your credit score. I have never had or applied for a gas card before so I am unsure how they work. I was looking at getting a card at "KWIK TRIP" and applying for the "Consumer Credit Card Kwik Card Plus." I can't post a link but if you google search and go to kwik trips website you can view it.

If anyone could give me any information if this card can help improve my credit at all? How it works? Do I get monthly bills or is anything done online? Anything else you can tell me would be great also .

    Thanks!

Anytime you are given credit by an lender that reports regularly to the credit bureaus, will affect your credit.

Gas cards are usually provided by banks that report activity. It is important to not use more than 50% of your credit line and pay your bill on time each month.

I highly suggest you not take and use any credit card unless you are sure you can pay your bill in full each month. You do not have to pay interest in order to build credit.

I haven't heard of "Kwik Trip" before, and their website frankly looks a bit outdated and shady. Apparently the Kwik Card only provides 5% cash back on gas for the first 4 months, and then it's 3 cents per gallon after that. It wouldn't surprise me if they don't offer online access and bill pay either.

I would much rather get a no annual fee card from a reputable company that I know reports to the CRAs, offers online access to everything, and provides cash back without limitations. Do some research online and you'll find lots of options. Discover offers some good cash back cards right now, and so does Chase.

And like maat5 says, make sure you use your new credit sparingly (under 30% of you total credit limit), and always pay your bills on time and in FULL. If you can do those 3 things, your credit score will certainly improve over time.
