  • Financial hiccups

No matter how well you plan your finances, there are financial hiccups that kind of throw your best laid plans to ruin. I remember when we were digging our way out of debt slowly but surely and it seemed we could almost see the light at the end of the tunnel when we had a branch of out big tree come breal off and come threw the roof of our house. It was a $1500 repair that really demoralized us at that time.

The unexpected has a way of happening anf throwing a speed bump here and there in our travel to being debt free. What has been your biggest financial hiccup?

Our biggest financial hiccup was when I had to go on bedrest with my pregnancy at 4.5 month. While I did receive some pay from work, it wasn't an easy transition from being a 2 income family to a one income family.

The day we had both cars break down. It cost over $2500 to get them fixed. Luckily I had an emergency fund that could pay them both off.

      Having a baby

I know we planned on it, but we had a kid already, a Yuppy baby as DH calls it, 270$ total, birth checkups everything.

Then we had DD, almost 5,000 no complications, no serious medical issues, just lousy insurance, boy did I hate being libertarian then (medicare babies are much cheaper)

When i bought my house 10 years ago, i was not aware, and home inspector didn't uncover, some serious drainage problems on my property due to very high (seasonal) water table. I've seen streams of water coming through my cinder block walls in basement like little spigots after heavy rain or snow melt in spring. Scary.

Spent $4K last summer on a curtain drain in back of property; i knew there was a chance it wouldn't fully correct the problem like a drain around the house foundation would, but i was trying to save some beautiful old rhododendrons and mountain laurel surrounding the house. They grow up to 2nd level of my house and are really beautiful.

unfortuantely, the back yard curtain drain does help, but not enough to eliminate damp spots on my basement/garage floor most of the year, again, due to high water table. since i plan to sell in a year or so, i've got to deal with it, so have to spend another $6K this fall to correct it, tho the contractor is digging inside and outside foundation and should be able to avoid killing the plants.

Anyway, all my hard work all year long at my freelance writing job ($100 here, $100 there) will just go to pay for this single thing. Kills me to do it, but it's got to be done.

The hospital where I worked until 2001 became insolvent. I was lucky to recover my 403b and 401k from the lot. It was a terrible time not being able to pay bills, but I made it.

We have no health insurance-my husband is self-employed and we cannot afford insurance for a family of seven. So any trip to the doctor is a financial hiccup for us. We had insurance through my work with our first child, but the four following were paid out of pocket. My youngest is three and we finally paid her off about 18 months ago )

Now my older children are needing braces-the oldest one already has them and I found out that the other two are probably on their way. It looks like we'll be making monthly payments to the orthodontis now (

              Debtfree:

Bless ya hun! Have you checked into Catholic Dental Plans? They might have a plan for you that would cover orthodontics. They are quite the family friendlyinsurance company.

              Good luck hun!
