      Necessities
      Retirement and Short term savings
Fun Money (a set amount, not unlimited)
      Debt payoff

I have seen a lot of people put debt payoff before fun money, but if I did that, I wouldn't have any fun money for the next couple of years (used to have my priorities that way but decided that living a little now was required). The leftover all goes to debt payoff. I prioritize by length of debt because then I have less bills to pay (all my short term is 0% so strictly speaking, mortgage should always come first if I did it by interest rate). I haven't acquired any new debt and am slowly paying off the old so I am pretty happy with my current set of priorities. These priorities will probably stay in this order for some time to come because the mortgage will take a bit to pay off. Oh and short term savings include the EF and house projects money (new roofs cost money and shouldn't be delayed beyond a certain point).

We recently focussed on changes to our priorities. I wanted to make small changes so that no more than 50% net income covered necessities, no more than 30% discretionary spending, 20% in various investment plans. When I did the math, I found that we need to pay attention to spending we have no control over like utilities, municipal tax, and car/house insurance. It's hard to figure heating costs in the summer with natural gas around $ 4. GJ. What will it be in the winter? Will all these disasters escalate insurance again? This summer I've been able to increase savings by 7% likely due to the fact that we've had so many visitors, I've not had time to spend.
