  • Need Newer car! To buy or not to buy?

I have a 1998 honda accord. 12 years old, over 200,000 miles. It is a dollar car now. A dollar here, a dollar there, to keep it going. I would like to have another honda, but as you know they are quite expensive. Should I put more money in mine. Or choose a used, newer model. Confused or which way to go? CameoRose

I would suggest that you buy a newer used model. Your car is too old and its only going to get worse, no matter how much you get it fixed. A newer car is a much more economical idea.

Specifically what needs to be done to your current Honda for you to be comfortable with the thought of you keeping it and driving it for another year, or two, or longer? Without knowing what needs to be done or what it will cost, I can't answer your question.

I think decisions like this involve more than just money. They also involve comfort and convenience. Do you feel unsafe driving the car? Do you feel that you can no longer depend on the car? Do you find yourself spending more and more time getting the car serviced? Even if repair costs aren't terrible, there is a hassle factor that you need to account for.

I've got a 1998 Toyota but I've "only" got 125,000 miles so hopefully, I'm still a few years from this decision. Personally, my mindset is to replace the car when I reach the point where I would no longer trust taking the car on a long trip, like driving to Florida (2,000 miles roundtrip).

          Buy or Not to Buy?

I don't fell the car is dependable. I drive the regular route work, store etc. All within my driving zone. But never any where else. The oil has been changed every 3000 miles. It drives great. But is showing the wear. The motor itself has never been rebuilt. The tranny is not quite smooth any more. The water pump has been replaced twice. The turn signal switch has been replaced twice(factory defect). And the belts twice. Dollar here Dollar there. That's why I call her "Dollar" CameoRose

This is the bottom line for me. If I don't trust the car enough to drive it any distance, I don't want it. Time for a new one.
