  • Turbotax-with multiple state returns involved

I have never done my own taxes and have payed someone else to do them since being on my own. However, most places around here charge $100-150.

This year my taxes may not easy (but I don't really know as i've never tried) and I do not want to spend the money to pay an accountant or tax preparer. Has anyone ever used the free Turbotax software to do their taxes when they had multiple state returns? Is it fairly easy? I suppose it asks you questions about your living situations and files accordingly?

I work in NYC and live in NJ. So I have to file and NY and NJ tax return. Then I moved to NYC and I was also on unemployment for 2 weeks. So given all this, I think it sounds complicated.

Does Turbotax make it easy in these types of situations?

TT should guide you thru this.

Tax preperation is based primarily on W-2... meaning when the software asks if you have another W-2 and you input the information, it can then decipher you worked in 2 states or lived in one state and worked in another.

You basically answer a series of questions. I think one of them is even how long you lived in the state your reside and for how many months of the year. I would sure go for it! It may cost you a little more for two states, but it should be less than your previous experience with an accountant.

I used turbo tax when I moved from PA to CA without problems. I used the "delux" version. The free version available online may not be able to do multiple states.
