  • Are these taxable as income?

My student son lives in the midwest but his transportation to and from the site of his summer work was reimbursed by Cal Tech. His housing during that time was paid mostly by the school as well. But he had to live at the place Cal Tech said. Are those things taxable income--the reimbursement for transportation and the paid portion of his rent? The school decided not just where but with whom he rented (shared apartment), so it seems like it was a requirement of the job. It was far, far more expensive housing than he would have chosen on his own. In fact, I think the school's cost of housing exceeded the actual pay he recieved, so he coudl not have rented there otherwise. I really think this has to be looked at as a requirement of the job- Anyway, taxable? Taxable in part? He was at the same time paying rent on his primary apartment back home if that makes any difference.

Since many are working on federal income taxes now, I thought maybe someone might have some thoughts on this question.

Apparently, this post has been viewed 138 times. I don't know the answer. Can the school give any advice in this area?

I don't know the answer to this question, either. My only thought: if it is considered income, then I would think the school would send a form? On the other hand, if it is--like you say maybe it is offset somehow... (see-no help here. )

(I am hoping one of the CPAs on this board might see your question....)

there's a section on meals and lodging on page 7 and a section on transportation on page 8.

          I hope this helps.
