If that's the case, why not just keep everything joint and stop distinguishing between "your" money and "her" money?

ETA: You could still do a little allowance for each of you for "fun" stuff.

    Steve

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

In our case, that's basically what our discretionary counts are for.

To your other point, convincing wifey around money stuff requires sophistication, sensitivity, and a bottle of rum

Wow. This kind of thing is probably why I'm not married.

I'd say that it's a good idea to have a set amount of "pocket money" per week for "discretionary" for both spouses. Say $200 to $300 a week. This would pay for your lunches, new shoes, a haircut, couple hookers, bottle of jack daniels, whatever you'd normally need thru the week. If you don't spend it, give it back or take less next week.

BMW 5 series and Flat Screen TV's are like oxygen. Without them, what separates us from the animals? These should be part of your regular budget. Anything for your household should be a joint discussion - changing long distance providers, hiring a younger hotter maid, having the pool resurfaced, whatever.
