  • Mastercard SecureCode??

I placed an online order last the other night and a pop-up window came up. It was Mastercard SecureCode (this is my debit card I am using with MC logo). It had a "No Thanks" button so I hit that as I didn't have a clue what this was, and it was asking for too much info in my opinion. Last 4 digits of my SSN, my DOB, email, and then a log-in and password.

I check my account online and see that the order is processing. However, I get a call this morning from someone in India saying that I needed to call the bank, get the log-in and pw info, and re-order. Currently they haven't canceled the order.

It looks to me that Mastercard SecureCode is a way for merchants online to be guaranteed that the money will come through. I guess they get a lot of chargebacks.

At this point in time I am not going to do anything until I see the bank has canceled the payment. I got a confirmation on the order via email and it didn't say anything about needing to do something else. You would have thought if it didn't process they would have sent a different email.

If they can't process it then I will just use another company.

SecureCode is a special security feature offered by MasterCard. It's like a secret passphrase that you use for additional security at participating retailers. It is something that you can choose to set up with your bank. Retailers participating in the program should not be asking for it or requirinig it if you have not set it up. Sounds like someone might be trying to scam you. Be careful with your info.

Thank you, that is how I felt, just a little leery. I sent an email to our bank. Our bank recently was closed and bought out so it is going through some issues as it is, but they never gave any info about SecureCode.

I figure if they want my business they will process the order without this because I am not setting it up just for one order (if it is even available at our bank). I don't mind if they wait to ship the order until the bank has cleared the funds, that doesn't bother me.

          Follow up

The pre-authorization is still on the account, don't know how many days it hangs on there, but I finally got an email saying the order was canceled. I did the live chat at their website, my gosh are they inefficient. She must have been several people at once it was taking so long.

She told me that the records indicate that I canceled the order. I told her that wasn't true, that I was told the order would be canceled if I didn't do the SecureCode. She then tried to talk me into placing a fresh order, assured me I wouldn't be double billed. I couldn't get it across to her that until the one drops off, I would be having the funds for that tied up twice. I am not going to do business with a company that is making it this difficult to order with.

I did get an email back from the bank giving me the info on how to use the SecureCode, but it isn't something that they just have a password for like the Indian guy tried to implied (most likely he was reading from a script).

I am just going to use another website that I have used before, this one was cheaper but not if it is going to be such a headache!
