  • Does it really save money to have your air conditioner checked out

I am frustrated by our electric bill. We were out of town for 2 weeks in July. We turned the air up to 87 degrees so it wouldn't run much. No other electricity used except for the pool pumps, which costs about $30 a month to run and the refrigerator. we still got a bill for $230!!! Calls to the utility company were pretty useless except that she mentioned we might want to have our air conditioner checked out. It had never occurred to me because it seems to work fine and is only 5 years old. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to have it checked out. What could they possibly find that would make my elelctric bill lower?

The short answer is yes, I believe so.

My AC is leaking fluids. I only know that because I knew someone who is HVAC certified come out and inspected the unit. He recharged with Freon, but said that wherever this leak is, it would only be a matter of time before the Freon is gone again. And when Freon runs low, it becomes much harder, requiring more energy, to keep the house cool. And considering the cost that most people charge for fixing such a leak (depending on where it's leaking) he said that it's best to just pay for a brand new unit.

In the meantime, I've been getting by on a room AC unit, because I really can't afford to replace the unit right now. It's working great, but I'm also single so.... Before that though, suffice to say, my electric bill has been climbing at an alarming rate....

I get my two units checked out once a year. He basically comes and changes flters, checks freon, washes the coils outside, flushes the system out. I call him in his slow season which is at the beginning of the year in this part of the country and he usually has a spring special. It costs me $79 to have them checked out.

That said, I just started having this annual service done about 3 years ago, I never did before and had some issues and ended up replacing both A Coils which cost me $500/each.

Also consider how old is your unit? Mine is 15 years old and the newer ones they make now are so much more effeciant but its not cost effective for me to replace the entire system yet

My unit is 14 years old and I never had it checked out. Figure it would be a waste as it cools as good as the day I bought it. If you didn't already I would change the filter.

I have my central air unit checked out every year... costs like $90.00. It's tough to figure out the savings but I'm sure getting your boiler and AC units maintained is a good idea
