Is this safe to do at websites that advertise this? I know pages are encrypted but seems like a risk.

Whenever giving personal information like SSN or Credit Card details online, there are two main things to look for:- First, make sure the site you are on is a legitimate company that you trust, or is publicly known to be trustworthy. eBay, PayPal, Google, are a few that everyone knows and trusts for example.
- Second, find the "lock" icon near the internet address in your Web browser. Alternatively it may be in the status bar across the bottom of your browser. If it is there, it doesn't mean the site is 100% safe, but it means your data is encrypted (coded) while it gets sent to the site owner.

You generally are not legally required to provide your Social Security number to most businesses - including most health care providers. However, some companies might refuse to do business with you if you don’t provide your Social Security number. There is no law that prevents businesses from requesting your SSN, and there are few restrictions on what businesses can do with it.
If a business insists on knowing your SSN when you do not see a reason for it, I would encourage you to speak to a manager who may be authorized to make an exception or who may know whether company policy requires it. If the company will not allow you to use an alternate number such as your driver’s license number, you may want to take your business elsewhere.
So be very sure that whoever you provide your SSN is in safe hands or it can be misused.
